The Veterans Carry Their Standard Proudly
What fascinates me as I look back on this annual parade is that the marchers were all veterans. That is, veterans of the Armed Forces of Gemany. The German community of Chicago was large, influential, and proud. You can see this pride reflected in the men who carry the standard. Back then we took these grand men very much for granted. In hindsight, I wonder how they were able to march in the heart of the nation's Second City, since I would guess that most of these men must have had something to do with the two world wars that we fought with Germany. But then, Riverview Park was the only place that I know of where beer flowed freely right through Prohibition.
